This year’s edition of the U.S. Open was the 135th and it was held in Flushing Meadows at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament from the tennis calendar. Winning here means the last chance to get a big number of points before the ATP and WTA Final tournament. With great tennis come great moments so let’s remind ourselves of the best moments of the 2015 U.S. Open.
Fish out of the bowl
American tennis player Mardy Fish announced before the start of the US Open that he was going to retire after the end of the tournament. Unfortunately, Fish lost in the second round of the Grand Slam when he was confronted by the number 18 seed Feliciano Lopez. This wasn’t the last game he played here even though he lost. Due to the fact that he retired from tennis after the defeat from the Spanish player, the American competed in a Legends Doubles match with fellow retiree Jim Courier; a fun time was had by all and Fish made a wise choice by retiring in the biggest tennis tournament held on American soil. Mardy Fish was a long time ambassador for tennis in his country and his attitude and cheerfulness made him a fan favorite over time.
Fall of the goddesses
In the semifinals at the women single tournament two miracles happened; both matches turned out to have different winners than everyone tought they would. Simona Halep was defeated by the next to be champion Flavia Pennetta without any effort from the Italian player. This was shocking but the fact is that the Romanian player had a rough year, while Pennetta played the best tennis of her life this year. The second semifinal of the women’s tournament was amazing to watch and delivered the same surprise as the other one; the favorite player to win the match was defeated. This was more shocking because it was about Serena Williams losing in her home Grand Slam. She lost against Roberta Vinci, an Italian player that left all people stunned to see their goddess fall at her feet. For both Pennetta and Vinci this was the first time appearing in a Grand Slam singles final and they provided the public with great tennis.
Serena vs. Venus
The two sisters met for the 27th time in their careers at this edition of U.S. Open. Watching these two play against each other is simply amazing. It’s obvious they know every aspect of the other one’s game and this makes their confrontations even more spectacular. Serena won against her bigger sister and they left the court together and happy.
No. 1 reigns supreme
The men’s final had the outcome that everyone expected and Novak Djokovic reigned supreme over Roger Federer. This was their 42 match and it evened the score to 21-all. This was the second U.S. Open title the Serbian player won and the 10th Grand Slam title. He worked hard and played insanely good to defeat the Swiss and take revenge for the last match the two played against each other in which Federer beat Djokovic in the final of the tournament.
